DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a 5-day intensive for beginning silversmiths. We will convene for 8 hours each day which includes a one hour break for lunch.
DATES: 4/25-4/29/2024, 9AM-5PM
Students will focus on how to use the torch to strategically melt sterling silver to create a variety of organic forms based on flora found in the Wasatch Front.We will use silver scraps and wire to fabricate flowers, leaves, bark and more. Demonstrations will also include carving with the flex shaft and forming with hammers and stakes. Students will create several pieces throughout the week.
Five-day intensives give students understanding of what is involved to work full-time as a silversmith.
The cost of the workshop will include:
5 days of training and interaction; 1 3×3″ sheet of 22 gauge sterling silver; 1 3×3″sheet of 24 gauge sterling silver; 1 5′ 16 gauge sterling silver round wire; 1 5′ 18 gauge sterling silver round wire; 1 3′ 20 gauge sterling silver round wire; silver solder
It is highly recommended that you bring sterling silver scrap and additional silver supplies. The Smithery will have additional supplies to purchase onsite.
Use of tools and equipment are included in the cost of the class but please feel free to bring tools you can’t work without.
Please bring your own eye/mouth/finger protection. If you have long hair, it will need to be tied back when working with the torch and rotary tools.
Please note that Nicole does not give students specific projects to complete. She offers many different demonstrations throughout the day, so you’re welcome to copy her demonstrations or take the techniques to incorporate into your own designs. She encourages you to explore your own artistic expression.
Lunch is not included but there are several fast food restaurants and a wide variety of Asian food close by. We have both a refrigerator and a microwave.
TUITION: $900
MATERIALS KIT: Varies with the amount of sterling silver used. However, the materials listed above are provided by Nicole. Additional silver needed can be purchased from the Smithery or you can bring it will you.
SKILL LEVEL: Advanced beginner (adept with soldering and melting with a torch)
Attendees are required to sign a waiver of liability at least once before registering for an open studio.
