Sandstone Casting Workshop with Matagi Sorensen

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

This hands-on, two-day workshop introduces participants to the art of sandstone casting. Originally used for casting iron, this technique has been adapted for precious metals, allowing for the creation of distinctive jewelry with organic surface textures and natural variations. Participants will work directly with sand block molds to learn how molten silver can be shaped using simple yet versatile casting methods.

The workshop begins with an overview of how to prepare and pack sandstone molds, focusing on strategies for creating clean impressions and effective gating for metal flow. Participants will then progress through the casting process, including safe handling of molten silver and techniques for achieving successful pours. After casting, students will explore basic finishing techniques to refine their pieces, transforming raw castings into completed jewelry forms.

Each step of the process will be demonstrated in detail, followed by dedicated studio time for experimentation and refinement. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how mold preparation, metal flow, and cooling affect the final form and texture of the cast pieces. The workshop encourages creative exploration, allowing participants to experiment with unique forms and surface effects characteristic of sand casting.

Instruction is suitable for a wide range of experience levels. Beginners will receive a clear introduction to casting fundamentals, while more experienced jewelers can expand their technical vocabulary and incorporate sandstone casting into their existing studio practice.
