CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Take your silversmithing skills to the next level and use base metals to make this beautiful Southwest Landscape Pendant.
Have you wanted to add color contrast to your sterling silver jewelry but felt hesitant to work with base metals? Have you tried soldering brass or bronze to silver, only to find it a bit too tricky?
In this class, we will explore the art of mixing silver with copper, brass, and bronze to create beautiful, wearable art — a beautiful landscape pendant. Bring your design or design one in class.
What we will cover:
Design & Prep: Planning mixed-metal pieces and understanding how different metals behave together.
Core Techniques: Texturing, sawing, shaping, and specialized soldering techniques (including sweat soldering).
Finishing: Finishing, polishing, and effective ways to seal and protect your piece against natural oxidation and tarnish (base metals will inevitably darken if not protected).
DATES: Wednesdays, August 12 – September 2, 6-9pm
INSTRUCTOR: Aude Bermond Hamlet
MATERIALS KIT: Depends on materials chosen and size. Copper, brass, and bronze sheet. Students can bring their own sterling silver (sheet, wire, bezel wire) and gemstones, or purchase them directly from the studio.
SKILL LEVEL: Confident soldering skills required
